September 16 marks the anniversary of St. John Paul II’s Papal Visit to Edmonton in 1984.
In this video, Fr. Paul Kavanagh, rector of St. Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica, recalls his memories of this historic event.
Between both his visits to Edmonton (as Cardinal Wojtyła in 1969), the saint visited Holy Rosary Polish Parish, St. Joseph’s Cathedral Basilica, Elk Island National Park, Namao Air Force Base, Mission Hill, Grey Nuns’ Centre, and celebrated Mass under the Dove of Peace which was moved to its current location in Gallagher Park.
The Holy Father also blessed a cross which stood in Fort Edmonton Park until the recent renovations.
