Befriending the Unknown: The Challenges and Gifts of Times of Transition
Moving through times of change and transition is challenging. Transitions create much uncertainty and move us into a liminal space of the unknown. While uncomfortable, this in-between time invites us into inner growth. It is a place where we meet the divine. This retreat will explore how befriending the unknown in times of transition can lead to transformation both societal and personal. Through prayer, scripture, small group sharing and teaching we will explore together both the challenges and gifts that times of transition bring. Debbie Doornbos, B.Th. - Debbie is a retreat leader, and spiritual director with extensive experience leading small groups, creating and facilitating retreats and leading group process. She especially enjoys working with people through life’s many transitions. Debbie’s work has included being the Canadian Director for Sacred Art of Living, Program Director at Providence Renewal Centre, and a variety of contract work. She is an outdoor enthusiast, a passion she shares with her husband. Her five grandchildren are among her greatest teachers. Margaret Clark, D. Min. - Margaret is a Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner within the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS). Her diversified ministry involvements have included faith community leadership, hospital based chaplaincy and supervision, adult education, and spiritual direction. In each ministry context Margaret has encountered myriad experiences of transition. It is a topic of reflection and prayer that continues to deepen and grow. Margaret enjoys long walks, fibre arts, and sharing good food with good friends. |

Do you ever relax? Does your boss praise your willingness to go the “extra mile” but is unaware that your life is rushed and over-committed? Maybe your health is taking second place to your job and your family wishes you had more time for them? Are you missing a connection to your spiritual side? Perhaps you are burnt out and have lost all desire to do anything. Have you almost forgotten what play and relaxation feel like? These stresses are not just associated with paid work, but can also surface as hobbies, exercise, housework, or just trying to save the world. Here’s a solution If this sounds like your life, you may benefit by meeting with people who share these problems and are finding a solution in Workaholics Anonymous. We invite you to attend our 12 Step open meetings. We gather to share our experience, strength and hope for a life of serenity and joy. All are welcome! Meetings are held 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month, 7 – 8 p.m. Location: Star of the North Retreat Centre, 3A St. Vital Avenue in St. Albert. A Zoom link is also provided for those who are unable to attend in-person. |

Join us on Thursday, October 8th for a special lecture by Dr. Mark Nesti, titled “Flourishing of the Human Person in Sport: In Conversation with Sport Psychologist Dr Mark Nesti”, sponsored by the Kule Chair in Catholic Religious Education and Newman Theological College. Building on Pope Leo's recent letter about a pastoral approach to sport and the Church's long-standing involvement in sport, especially in Catholic schools and colleges, the Kule Chair and NTC is pleased to welcome an in-person conversation with sport psychologist Dr. Mark Nesti. The discussion will engage his long-standing research and applied practice in sport psychology and his engagement with existential phenomenology (constructed with assistance from Aquinas, Pieper, and others) to provide a more person-centered approach to the care for human athletes. Educational themes of meaning, purpose, beauty, and vulnerability will also be addressed. Dr. Nesti is a specialist in psychology applied to sport, especially in relation to tennis, golf, cricket, and football/soccer, where he has worked in Premier League football with first team players and staff. He has held lecturing positions at several UK schools, including Liverpool John Moores University where he led its highly ranked MSc program for over a decade. Originally from Scotland, Dr. Nesti also worked in Rome during 2018 on the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life document, “Giving the Best of Yourself”, relating to a Christian perspective of sport and the human person. RSVP at: forms.gle/EJG2BwWfiNgDmv3x9 Date: October 8, 2026 Location: St. Joseph’s College Boardroom Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm (light reception to follow) |
