Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations

The Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations has a dual mandate:

  • To promote the restoration of unity among Christian churches and ecclesial communities throughout the Archdiocese
  • To foster good relations, friendship and mutual understanding between Catholics and members of other faith communities (e.g. Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.)

Compelled by the desire of Jesus Christ "that all may be one" (John 17:21), and encouraged by the spirit of Vatican II, the office fullfills its missions by organizing activities of ecumenical and inter-faith prayer, education, dialogue and common witness.

50th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council's Decree on Ecumenism: Unitatis Redintegratio

Pilgrims Together: Celebrating Christian Unity

On November 21, 1964 Pope Paul VI promulgated the Decree on Ecumenism (Unitatis redintegratio). In it the Council Fathers declared, "The restoration of unity among all Christians is one of the principal concerns of the Second Vatican Council. Christ the Lord founded one Church and one Church only." [1] Thus, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, it is fitting to recall one of its principal concerns: Christian unity. Remembering this ground breaking document in a significant way provides an opportunity for Catholic Christians to commit themselves anew to the vision of Christian unity espoused by the Council. A celebration reminds all Christians of the great strides that have been made in ecumenical relationships since the Council and, at the same time, encourages us as a "pilgrim church" [2] to continue the journey toward unity. As Pope Francis reminds Christians in his recent exhortation Evangelii gaudium, "We must never forget that we are pilgrims journeying alongside one another." [3]
