Blessed Sacrament Church in Wainwright hosted its annual Solemn Blessing of First Responders and Their Families, drawing community members together in a heartfelt tribute to those who serve on the front lines of emergencies.
“In moments of tragedy, we instinctively turn to those trained to protect, heal, and rescue,” said Rev. Benjamin Obetta, CFIC, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church. “This event is our way of showing appreciation for the incredible work first responders do every single day.”
Now in its second year, the April 6 event continues to build on the success of its 2024 debut. Co-sponsored by the Blessed Sacrament Parish and the Knights of Columbus Luke Killoran Council #4510, the ceremony offered a space for gratitude, reflection, and community fellowship.
The Solemn Blessing is a non-denominational gathering that honors individuals who are often the first to respond in times of crisis. These include RCMP officers, firefighters, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, emergency department staff—doctors, nurses, and technologists—as well as members of the military and professionals from local funeral homes.
The service began at 7 p.m. and was followed by a reception in the church hall, where light refreshments were served and attendees had the opportunity to personally thank local first responders for their ongoing service.
To further underscore the significance of their contribution, the Town of Wainwright officially proclaimed the week of March 31 to April 6 as First Responders Week.
The proclamation, signed by Mayor Bruce Pugh, encourages all residents to recognize and celebrate the courage and dedication of first responders within the community.
The Solemn Blessing ceremony continues to be a meaningful annual tradition, offering a reminder of the essential role first responders play in ensuring the safety and well-being of Wainwright and surrounding areas.
