In his address to the Centesimus Annus Foundation, Pope Leo XIV argued that the poor are a treasure to both the Church and humanity, offering perspectives that are “often dismissed, yet crucial for seeing the world through God’s eyes.”

Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s ministry brings this sentiment to life. On June 5, 2025, the SSVP hosted its inaugural gala, Building Hope & Dignity.

The evening at the Chateau Lacombe in Edmonton featured a dinner, live auction, and a keynote address by Sister Fay Trombley, SCIC. Emcee Tim Spelliscy welcomed honoured guests, including the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Attendees included representatives from partner agencies, local parishes, and members of the wider Archdiocese of Edmonton community.

The SSVP Gala hosted the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta as a special guest.

Randall Yatscoff, President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for the past four years, and Peter Ouellette, a regional coordinator involved in both Edmonton and northern outreach, shared their thoughts on why the inaugural gala was long overdue.

“The Society has grown tremendously in the last few years, especially doubling in size over the past three,” said Yatscoff. “We’ve been working under the radar for a long time. This gala is our way to share our mission with a wider audience. Not just to raise funds, but to spread awareness.”

Sister Fay Trombley, SCIC gave the keynote address.

Ouellette echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to “shout from the rooftops” about the Society’s work, which often goes unnoticed despite its significant impact. His coordination of the North of 60 program highlights some of the unique challenges they face, such as the shift from barging to expensive trucking due to low water levels in the Mackenzie river.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of community support. Yatscoff issued a heartfelt call for more volunteers, noting the aging demographic of their current team. “We need more hands! The demand is there, whether it’s reaching out to the poor, refugees, or those in need. We can only do what we can. This mission is vital and ongoing.”

Organizing the gala was a massive team effort, with Yatscoff giving special thanks to Mary Dunnigan, Peter Ouellette, and the entire committee for their dedication.

Looking ahead, Yatscoff said the Society plans to hold the gala again, though whether it becomes an annual or biennial event remains under review. “We’re stretched thin with demand on our staff, but this event has already become more than just fundraising, it’s about telling our story.”

For those interested in getting involved, Yatscoff encourages visiting the Society’s website or connecting through local parishes within the Archdiocese.
