From humble gatherings in school gyms to a vibrant parish community, Corpus Christi Parish in Edmonton celebrated the anniversary of the Dedication of the Altar and Blessing of the Church.
Ten years ago, on Saturday, March 19, 2016, Archbishop Richard Smith presided over the Dedication Mass. Concelebrating at his side were Archbishop Emeritus Joseph MacNeil, Cardinal Thomas Collins (former Archbishop of Edmonton), Auxiliary Bishop Greg Bittman and several priests and deacons from the Archdiocese.
The March 19 Anniversary Mass was presided over by Father Martin Carroll, who was pastor of St. Theresa’s Parish at the time when we were asked to begin to hold Masses in two schools: Father Michael Troy Junior High and Holy Family Elementary/Junior High.
Father Jim Corrigan, who was appointed pastor of St Theresa’s in 2008 and given the task of building the new church, delivered the homily at the Anniversary Mass. During the homily, Father Jim reminded us that the journey, to this point had actually been more than 20 years as we began celebrating Masses in the schools in 2004.
Following the Mass, Father Joseph Vadassery, who was the first pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, unveiled the 10-year anniversary plaque.
Joining us for the Mass were our past pastors and several associate pastors, as well as many others who have provided care for our community through the years.
Everyone was welcomed into the parish aall for an informal wine and cheese reception following the unveiling.
The Anniversary team put together a display of many memories consisting of plans, pictures and church drawings, including four binders of drawings from the school children, who were asked to draw what they thought the new church should look like.
Corpus Christi Parish will continue the 10-year celebrations throughout the year with various events, including a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament around the grounds on Sunday, June 7 on the Feast of Corpus Christi. That procession will take place following the 11:30 a.m. Mass.
We encourage the faithful of the Archdiocese of Edmonton to visit our parish at any time.
All Are Welcome.
