Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are deeply saddened to share that St. Clare’s Parish in Edmonton was recently targeted in two serious acts of vandalism. Over 25 stained-glass windows were shattered, and disturbing graffiti and satanic imagery were left on the church building.

There is not yet a full damage estimate, however, it’s expected to be at least $250,000 to repair the stained-glass windows alone.

In the first incident, on Monday, October 20, from 4:17 a.m. until 5:05 a.m., three suspects smashed the exterior windows of the church using rocks and spray-painted exterior walls.

The three suspects did not enter the building, but threw numerous rocks through the windows into the interior. One large rock flew far enough to land a foot away from the baptismal font. Thankfully, minimal damage was done to the interior of the building.

With the help of parishioners, members of the Catholic Women’s League, and 30 members of the St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Community, the glass was cleared, and the windows were boarded up.

In a second incident at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, the suspects returned to cause further damage to the church windows.

The Edmonton Police Service has been notified, and an investigation is ongoing. Additional security measures have been implemented at the church.

Despite this painful event, the community of St. Clare’s remains firm in faith. Masses will continue. This Sunday, I will concelebrate Mass with pastor Fr. Glenn McDonald to offer visible support and unity in Christ.

A liturgy, which takes place following the desecration of a church, is being prepared. St. Clare, the church’s namesake, famously repelled an invading army from her convent by displaying a monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament. Sunday’s liturgy will reflect St. Clare’s action.

Fr. Glenn asks that we pray for the conversion of the three suspects involved in these incidents:

“Let us pray for the conversion of wayward young people, that they may use their gifts and talents to build up our community. Let us also give thanks for people of goodwill who help guide young people in the ways of truth, beauty and goodness.”

Please keep Fr. Glenn, the staff, and the parishioners of St. Clare’s in your prayers. May this moment of trial deepen our resolve to proclaim the Gospel and remain steadfast in hope.
