The Edmonton Diocesan Catholic Women’s League Council drew members from across the region to Holy Family Catholic Church on April 17–18 for its 104th Annual Convention, where faith, outreach, and leadership renewal took centre stage under the theme “Ignite Your Passion, Empower His Mission.” The gathering highlighted the League’s ongoing impact in the archdiocese, from spiritual formation to frontline community support, while setting a course for the year ahead.
The convention opened with Mass presided over by Archbishop Stephen Hero. In his homily, His Grace reflected on the life of Kateri Tekakwitha, drawing parallels between her devotion and the ongoing witness of nearly 3,800 members of the Catholic Women’s League in the Edmonton Archdiocese. He commended their enduring commitment to service and faith.
Following the Mass, Diocesan President Jean Ashdown formally introduced the Archbishop at a wine and cheese reception hosted by the Knights of Columbus Brother Anthony Council. During the reception, Archbishop Hero shared a personal testimony of faith, offering attendees a deeper glimpse into his spiritual journey.
Throughout the convention, members engaged with a variety of speakers addressing faith, social outreach, and Catholic traditions. Patrick Dumelie, representing Covenant Health, presented a historical overview of Catholic health care in Alberta. Meanwhile, Gwen Meding led participants through an interactive Bible study focused on Sunday readings, incorporating teachings from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
A significant portion of the convention highlighted refugee support efforts in Edmonton. Rima Maalouf and Charles Byusa of Catholic Social Services spoke about the process of welcoming newcomers. They expressed gratitude to CWL councils for their longstanding contributions to Refugee Welcome Bags, distributed to new arrivals at Reception House.
Members also participated in a solemn memorial service honouring CWL members and spiritual advisors who had passed away over the past year, marking a moment of reflection and remembrance.
The convention concluded with the election of a new leadership team. Lara Bechtal was named the new Diocesan President, ushering in a new chapter for the organization as it continues its mission of faith-driven service across the region.
