Letter to Jewish Community after Hanukkah attack

On Dec. 14, we were shaken by the horrifying news of a deadly act of violence against the Jewish community. The attack occurred as families gathered for a Menorah lighting at Bondi Beach in Australia, marking the beginning of Hanukkah — days sacred to the Jewish people and dedicated to light and hope.

The impact of this violence continues to reverberate around the world, deepening fear and grief among our Jewish brothers and sisters. That such an attack would take place during holy days wounds us all. As Catholics, we unequivocally reject antisemitism, hatred, and every form of violence that desecrates the dignity of the human person.

The Archdiocese remains united with you in prayer. We mourn the victims, pray for their families, and stand in solidarity with the Jewish community, honoring God’s enduring covenant with the Jewish people.

In the days ahead, may we seek concrete ways to show compassion and support to our Jewish neighbors, offering love as an antidote to fear and hatred.
