World Youth Day (WYD) is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The last WYD was celebrated in Panama City, Panamá from January 22-27, 2019 and the next World Youth Day will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2023.
WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a festive encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. This event is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church; to share with the whole world the hope of many young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions.
Manuel Cardinal Clemente, Patriarch of Libson, expressed his excitement for the future in an exclusive interview with WorldYouthDay.com.
“Portugal is a country for all the world. Its a nice country with nice people. We shall receive you with great pleasure and pleasure to be with you and leave with you the gospel of Jesus Christ. We wait for you,” said Cardinal Clemente.
The announcement of Lisbon as the next WYD host city was made by Kevin Cardinal Farrell, head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, at the final Mass of World Youth Day Panama.
