VIDEO: Chief Littlechild and Archbishop Smith's Statement on Kamloops and Reconciliation

Chief J. Wilton "Willie" Littlechild and Archbishop Richard Smith met this week in Maskwacis, and are offering this joint statement on the Kamloops Residential School discovery, and on reconciliation.

Chief Littlechild is a former Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations. He was also a commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a member of the 1977 Indigenous delegation to the United Nations, and worked on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada, Alberta Order of Excellence, and Queens Counsel.

Archbishop's Letter on Kamloops 215

We must acknowledge the role played by Catholic organizations in the residential school system. I recall my own testimony to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, given on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Alberta and the Northwest Territories:

“We apologize to those who experienced sexual and physical abuse in residential schools under Catholic administration. We also express our apology and regret for Catholic participation in government policies that resulted in children being separated from their families, and often suppressed Aboriginal culture and language at the residential schools.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle renews mission to heal relationship between Church and First Nations

As Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle, focused on the work of reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and all Canadians, we want to renew and celebrate the Spirit of Pentecost. Still relatively new as a coalition, we are convinced of the importance of language, the challenges of unity in diversity, and the impossibility of progress in reconciliation in our Church and communities apart from the work of the Holy Spirit.
