This two-part webinar series is a brief reflection on the history of the residential schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the long road towards Healing and Reconciliation. This educational video is presented by Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith, Deacon John Brown, Cardinal Thomas Collins - the Archbishop of Toronto - and Neil McCarthy, the director of communications for the Toronto Archdiocese.

Archbishop Smith to meet with Our Lady Queen of Poland Parish

Archbishop Richard Smith has been reaching out to leaders in the Polish, Indigenous and Jewish communities of Edmonton in regards to recent events at Our Lady Queen of Poland parish.

Archbishop Smith has also reached out to parishioners themselves. The Archbishop is scheduled to meet privately with a delegation from the parish. The meeting will address next steps and to work through these trying times.

The Archdiocese of Edmonton is also working with the Edmonton Police Service.

UPDATE Re: Statement regarding Rev. Marcin Mironiuk, OMI

Rev. Marcin Mironiuk, OMI, has been placed on indefinite administrative leave from ministry in the Archdiocese of Edmonton, effective immediately.

Archbishop Richard Smith made the decision Aug. 12 in light of statements by Rev. Mironiuk regarding the Jewish and Indigenous communities and on residential schools, and after consultation with Rev. Mironiuk’s Polish superiors, the Oblate Fathers of Assumption Province, and the affected communities in Edmonton.

Rev. Mironiuk’s statements were made during his announcements following Masses on July 18, 2021. The statements regarding the Jewish and Indigenous communities and residential schools were thoroughly unacceptable and cannot be ignored. They are offensive and have caused further pain to the Jewish community, to the Indigenous community, to residential school survivors and to all Canadians.

VIDEO: National Indigenous parish launches rebuilding campaign

Susai Jesu, together with priests throughout our Archdiocese, are sharing this letter, video, and brochure with all parishes and their parishioners to explain the project, its deep significance, and to call upon all local Catholics to act in support of the rebuilding of Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, the national Indigenous parish.

Serge Buissé to be ordained to transitional diaconate

Serge Buissé’s Mass of Ordination, presided by Archbishop Albert LeGatt, will be held on August 4, 7 p.m. (6 p.m. Alberta time) at Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens Parish.
