Sister Thecla Becher (Mary Serena) of the Sisters of Providence of Holy Angels Province died at Providence Centre Infirmary in Edmonton on Tuesday, August 14. She was 76.

Sister Thecla was born on October 16, 1941, and was in her 58th year as a member of the Sisters of Providence.

Sister Thecla was known for a love of caring for others. She had worked as a cook, group home worker and nurse, and in later years volunteered at the Anawim Food Bank in inner-city Edmonton. One of her great pleasures was meeting the clients there and establishing friendly relationships with them.

"People don't realize there are so many good, honourable people among the poor," she once said. "They are just like you and me."
