Edmonton area churches invited to share Christmas Eve offerings with seniors who have experienced abuse

Edmonton, November 13, 2012 - Christian churches in Edmonton are once again joining forces at Christmas to assist those at risk of homelessness through the annual No Room in the Inn campaign.

Seniors’ Safe House has been chosen as the 2012 project for the ecumenical justice housing initiative known as No Room in the Inn.  Seniors’ Safe House provides temporary accommodation and support for women and men who have had to leave their homes after experiencing elder abuse.  It is a program of the Seniors’ Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE), a community agency that has served seniors for more than 40 years.

After many years of use, the apartments in the Seniors’ Safe House need a major refurbishment.  The funds from No Room in the Inn will contribute to building renovations, support the restorative goals of the program, and will help seniors achieve a life without abuse.

No Room in the Inn, now in its 14th year, is an appeal based on the story of Mary and Joseph, who arrived in Bethlehem to discover that there was no room for them at the inn and so were forced to take refuge in a stable until Jesus was born. Each year, church congregations and parishes are invited to donate part of their Christmas Eve collections to the campaign. Funds raised are delivered to a different housing project each year, selected by a committee of volunteers from the Edmonton & District Council of Churches and the Quality of Life Commission.

To date more than 60 congregations from eight different denominations have raised over $580,000 for projects aimed at providing safe and affordable housing for those who are in greatest need.

Bob McKeon, a member of the No Room in the Inn Committee, notes that “elder abuse is a serious problem in our community.  Through this project, Christians can come together and help our senior citizens live a dignified life that is free of abuse.”
