A family physician with past trustee experience is ready to take up the challenges facing the Edmonton Catholic Schools board.

“Right now, I think the Catholic school board is challenged on a couple fronts,” said Dr. Peter Davis, who is running for election on Oct. 16 as trustee for Ward 73 in northeast Edmonton.

“One, there’s talk about the necessity or not of a separate school system in Alberta,” said Davis. “Two is, the board has to create an inclusive environment while remaining consistent with Catholic doctrine, and that’s a challenge.”

Before moving to Edmonton in 2011, Davis previously served as a trustee for the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division, known as STAR Catholic Schools, in Ponoka.

“I am aware of the value of Catholic education, and I’ve had to articulate for the benefit of Catholic education in the past,” he said.

Davis is running against trustee candidates Bernadette Iahtail, Jeff Lee and Carla Smiley.

Incumbent Ward 73 trustee Cindy Olsen is not running again after serving on the board for the past 10 years.

“It’s been a really rough ride,” said Olsen. “It’s been an incredible ride and I think I accomplished through the district and the Archdiocese a lot, but it does take a lot of energy and it’s just time for me to step back a bit and take care of myself and my family.”
