Archbishop Richard Smith, has issued a statement regarding the Guidelines for Best Practices: Creating Learning Environments that Respect Diverse Sexual Orientations,Gender Identities and Gender Expressions, recently released by the Alberta Minister of Education. This statement was shared with the priests and parishes of the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton Thursday morning.
In the statement, Archbishop Smith states that the Guidelines contain many constructive, thoughtful and reasonable suggestions for best practices, but others could pose problems for Catholic schools. He also notes that continuing governance problems among trustees at the Edmonton Catholic School District have not been helpful to the public discourse.
