Life and Family

The future of humanity passes by way of the family.
   - St. John Paul II (Familiaris Consortio #86)

The Office of Life and Family, as an extension of the Archbishop's ministry, exists to encourage, equip, and build up the body of Christ in the Archdiocese of Edmonton by assisting parishes in the development and implementation of programming and experiences promoting an authentic and holistic understanding of the human person, sexuality, marriage, and family life.

Services, programs, resources, or referrals are available for Marriage Preparation, Marriage Enrichment, Natural Family Planning, Sexuality, Life Issues, World Meeting of Families, and the annual World Marriage Day celebration.

Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide
Questions of life and death always provoke impassioned debates. Recently Canada again considered the possibility of legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide. Shouldn't we allow these practices in order to respect the freedom and dignity of patients? Don’t we have a right to die at the time and in the circumstances of our choosing? Doesn’t compassion require us to agree to the request of a sick person who wants to die?

It is impossible to remain indifferent to the danger posed to the most vulnerable among us by attempts to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide. Being well informed is essential in order to participate effectively in the public debate and to propose truly human and Christian solutions.

The Gospel of Everyday Life

The family is called to play a major role in the New Evangelization. COLF’s new letter to families “The Gospel of Everyday Life – An Adventure Worth Sharing!” reflects with you on the ways and means of proposing the friendship of Christ to the members of our families, our friends and colleagues at work, in the midst of our day-to-day life.

On the last page of the brochure, you will find a series of questions which will help you deepen your reflection. A Workshop Guide is available.
