“In addition to the common vocation of the apostolate, some lay people feel called interiorly by God to assume the service of catechist. The Church awakens and discerns this divine vocation and confers the mission to catechize. The Lord Jesus invites men and women, in a special way to follow him, teacher and formator of disciples. This personal call of Jesus Christ and its relationship to him are the moving forces of catechetical activity.”

Do you feel called to be a catechist in the Archdiocese of Edmonton? Are you already involved in children’s catechism, sacramental preparation, RCIA, or adult faith formation in the parish? Are you a parent or a grandparent? Are you interested in learning more about the faith and how to share it with those around you?
Newman Theological College offers a variety of certificate programs through the Benedict XVI Institute for New Evangelization, including a three-year certificate program in Catechesis. Year 1 of the program is a prerequisite entitled Faith Formation 1. Visit the college's Certificate in Catholic Studies page to get all the information you need.
Not sure if the Newman option is for you, but want to know more about how to talk to others about Jesus or to simply learn more about the Catholic Faith? The following books come highly recommended for anyone wanting to better echo Jesus’ message in the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
*This book is also important for parish pastoral councils and for priests as it includes a Pastoral Planning Guide as well as Guides for the Training of Catechists. There is also a self-evaluation for anyone discerning this important lay ministry in the Church.
